摘 要:

In this talk, I will discuss two reduplication patterns in Isbukun Bunun which are not mentioned in previous studies, foot reduplication and triplication. In foot reduplication, the reduplicant copies the stress foot, which is a quantity sensitive trochee, ranging from a heavy monosyllable to a heavy-light or a light-light disyllable. This reduplication pattern was formerly classified as total reduplication in previous studies due to the limited number of root types considered. Other than monosyllabic roots, previous studies have mainly focused on the most basic root type in the language, i.e., disyllabic roots with light syllable endings. When other root types are considered, it becomes clear the reduplicant does not always copy the entire root. In triplication, the reduplicant copies the stress foot just as in foot reduplication. But unlike in foot reduplication, the stress foot is copied twice and the stress foot copied can only be a heavy monosyllabic trochee but not a heavy-light or a light-light disyllabic trochee. Triplication is semantically dependent on foot reduplication in that the meanings denoted by triplication normally intensify those denoted by foot reduplication. Consequently, only roots that can undergo foot reduplication can undergo triplication. But not every root that undergoes foot reduplication can undergo triplication due to the size limitation of the reduplicant of triplication. This probably explains why triplication is non-productive in the language and unnoticed in previous studies.
