Constructing Identity in Global Contexts: Issues of Identity and Beyond

The Taiwan Journal of TESOL calls for submissions to a special issue titled “Constructing Identity in Global Contexts: Issues of Identity and Beyond.”
Since the mid-1990s, identity studies have been a popular line of research in SLA. Many international journals have published special issues, and international publishers have also published book volumes under the identity theme. Most of these works, however, were authored or edited by western scholars or scholars who based their research in the West. There have been relatively few reported studies investigating Asian learner and teacher identities, particularly in terms of how identity is constructed in view of a global context.
Asian countries are unique in the sense that our cultures and historical encounters can be both similar and different from one another, which in turn leads to similar but different language-learning and teaching identities. For example, many Asian countries share the so-called “Confucian Cultural Heritage,” which forms the basis of everyday interaction, but the western influence, although arriving as late as the end of the 19th century, led to an overwhelming need to study English perceived by generations of Asian populations. These two forces of cultural ideology can be conflicting at times. Many complex interactions between Asian identities and the English language as well as western cultures can differ based on the historical and contextual backgrounds of individuals. These possible similarities and differences observed in various Asian cultural contexts in the recent widely perceived sense of globalization warrant a special issue by an Asian-based, TESOL-related journal.
This special issue welcomes high quality contributions related to language learner and teacher identity from Asian perspectives. Any theoretical frameworks and research methodologies are welcomed. Potential topics for this special issue can include (but are not limited to):
English as a lingua franca
Study abroad experiences
Experiences in exchange programs
English-medium instruction (EMI)
Literacy and digital literacy
Online interaction
New technologies
Intercultural education
Language policy
Bilingual and multilingual education
Teacher development
Role of affect, context, and ideology
Translanguaging

Deadline for paper submission: February 12, 2017
Deadline for final submissions of all revisions: July 15, 2017
Time of publication: October 2017 (tentative)
Submission
Submissions should be limited to no more than 8,500 words. All submissions should be sent through Online Submissions. The subject line of the email should specify that it is being submitted to the special issue. All contributors must also sign and submit the Taiwan Journal of TESOL Contributor’s Declaration when submitting an article for consideration. About the Journal
The Taiwan Journal of TESOL is an international journal dedicated to the publication of research papers in TESOL. It welcomes contributions in all areas of the study of teaching English to speakers of other languages. Review articles of TESOL books and informal book announcements are also welcome. The Taiwan Journal of TESOL publishes one volume per year, composed of a Spring issue and a Fall issue. Contributions may be submitted from all countries and are accepted all year round. The language of publication is English. Manuscripts simultaneously submitted to other publications cannot be accepted. All contributors must sign and submit the Taiwan Journal of TESOL Contributor’s Declaration when submitting an article for consideration. Once the manuscript is accepted for publication, contributors must sign the Copyright License Agreement for NCCU Scholarly Journals Online for the manuscript to be included in databases designated by the Taiwan Journal of TESOL. Articles appearing in the Taiwan Journal of TESOL are indexed in:
