Call for Papers on
The Grammar of Canonical and Non-canonical Wh-constructions
Guest Editor: C.-T. James Huang (Harvard University)

Wh-constructions have occupied a central role in the development of grammatical theory of the last 60 years and contributed to our understanding of natural language syntax, semantics and the syntax-semantics interface. Investigation into languages with in-situ wh-constructions since the 1980s has greatly expanded its empirical basis, not only of canonical interrogatives, but also non-canonical constructions, including polar questions and the various non-interrogative uses of their wh-constructions (quantification and conditionals). More recent research has expanded the theoretical investigation to issues beyond the canonical sentence domains, addressing issues of pragmatics and their interface with grammar, and the special roles that particular wh-phrases play in triggering them. To highlight the importance of current research in these new developments, we propose to publish selected papers on the special theme, as a special of the journal Concentric: Studies in Linguistics. We cordially invite interested scholars to join us in this project by submitting your papers for editorial consideration. The deadline for submission is December 31, 2024.
