題目:Language Practices in Colonial Taiwan

摘要:As is well-known, between 1624 and 1662, there was a Dutch (VOC) colony in Taiwan and between 1626 and 1642 a Spanish colony in northern Taiwan. Furthermore, there was large-scale migration from the Chinese mainland to Taiwan. In this paper, I analyze the language practices that emerged during this period and the epistemic outcomes of contact between different languages in Taiwan during the ‘multilingual moment’ of European colonization (1624-62). I begin with a brief account of the language landscape before the arrival of the European colonizers, which was dominated by Austronesian Formosan languages. I then analyze how Europeans and non-Europeans, primarily Indigenous Formosans but also Chinese settlers, learnt each other’s language. After this, I analyze practices that emerged in this ‘sea of languages’, such as code-switching, the naming of people and places, and translation and interpretation. Not only does this paper provide an account of the consequences of language contact in colonial Taiwan but it also offers a lens through which to view social relations between speakers of the same language and between speakers of different languages. I conclude by analyzing the consequences for the language landscape or langscape in Taiwan after the Dutch colonizers were ejected from the island in 1662.
