摘要:While speech planning has long been a topic of discussion in the literature, the specific content of speech plans has remained largely conjectural. A series of experiments bring to this problem a methodology using startling auditory stimulus (SAS, > 120dB), a reliable trigger to release rapid and accurate responses, to examine the contents of prepared movement plans unaltered by feedback regulation. Prepared articulation in this talk refers to the outcome of the planning process in which the articulatory details are included as part of motor commands.
In this talk, I will show you how SAS provides a useful tool for observing the contents of speech plans. The first two experiments are to show how this SAS methodology is applied to CV syllable production. The first experiment is to examine whether English CV syllables can be elicited in the same manner as other limb movements and the second experiment looks into the level of suprasegmental gestures (i.e., pitch contour in Taiwan Mandarin) in speech planning. In the second half of the talk, I will illustrate the lip kinematics in SAS-induced responses and uses a 3D FEM biomechanical model to simulate the temporal interaction between the jaw and lips. The simulation findings suggest that while a feedforward speech plan includes inter-articulatory coordination, a certain degree of freedom in temporal decoupling may be allowed.
