主 題:Patterns of Featural Affixes across Chinese Dialects

摘 要:In this talk, I examine representative cases and patterns of featural affixes (including both segmental and prosodic features) across Chinese dialects, and generalize the governing principles under which these affixes are realized phonologically. Featural affixes have been proposed for a few Chinese dialects (e.g. Lin 1989, 1993; Duanmu 1990, Jiang 2008), but crosslinguistic surveys and/or theoretical analyses of featural affixes and the claims made on their behavior never mention Chinese data (e.g. Akinlabi 2011; Wolf 2007; Trommer 2012, 2014). After presenting a typology of Chinese featural affixes and their phonological realizations, I propose a set of principles governing the proper realizations of these affixes: (i) featural/prosodic licensing for a feature/mora to be realized, (ii) cooccurrence restrictions against incompatible or unacceptable feature combinations, (iii) the maximality principle to parse as many elements as possible, and (iv) contrast preservation to avoid phonological identity between a stem and its affixed form and/or among the affixed forms. The concluding remarks include a brief comparison with featural affixes in non-Chinese languages and relevant theoretical and typological implications.

主 題:Adapting English Nasals into Standard Mandarin:Nasal Gemination and Post-nasal Vowel Epenthesis

摘 要:In this talk, I examine how English nasals are adapted into Standard Mandarin (SM), and discuss (i) under what conditions nasals are or are not adapted faithfully, (ii) which adaptation strategy is adopted under which condition and why, and (iii) when and why variation may occur. After a brief review of Hsieh, Kenstowicz & Mou (2009), which shows that the choice between an alveolar and a velar coda nasal in English-based loanwords in SM depends on the backness of the pre-nasal vowel, I present the data and patterns of SM loanwords found in Huang & Lin (2014, 2015) on nasal germination of English intervocalic nasals and vowel epenthesis after English coda [m], showing that whether nasal germination and vowel epenthesis apply in SM crucially depends on the contexts in which the English nasals occur. By comparing a phonology-based account with one that integrates perception and phonology, I discuss whether or not, or the extent to which, perceptual similarity plays a role in these context-dependent adaptations of nasals. The talk will conclude with remarks on issues regarding (i) the phonetic vs. phonological nature of loanword adaptation and (ii) variable adaptations.
